Woodville Sept 16th 1879 His Excellency J M Stone Sir I am glad to learn from your favor of 29th ultimo that you expect soon to visit [illegible] But I hope the contemplated meeting of the Trustees may be delayed as long as circumstances will justify. For I have institued a series of experiments which I wish to prosecute through October. from sorghum. Experts pronounce is genuine sugar cane syrup and are hard to convince otherwise until they see me producing these on a larger scale on several farms. I have awakened an enthusiasm that is quite surprising and large propositions [?] me for another year. My processes are totally diffirent from those of Mr. Iternant of Pa, my chemicals all diffirent and costing only about half cent per gallon of syrup or pound of sugar. I wish especially next month to experiment for those in regard to sugar. I use

no [deletious?] drugs in chemicals, while Stewart and others do. Although angrd by friends time and again I have refused to patent any of my discoveries in other lives and shall not monopolise those. In five years; nay, in two years, we can become independent of Cuba and save $100,000,000 sent there annually for sweets.
But pardon this diznssion I write now especially to ask your examination into the "fitness" of Rev G.S. Roudebush, now I think of Crystal Springs, for the Presidency of the Axell College. He was forming president of Oakland College, the sale of

which to the State he negotiated and received therefore $40,000 he tells me instead of $32,000 as we had supposed. Since then he has spent some years in Ky and recently has been engaged in getting up an institution for girls near Natchiz. He was for some time at the head of the Natchiz Institute
You no doubt have them appreciation of Prof Shepherd of the Va. A. tell. College for a professorship.
