Description

Charles E. Morgan was a Republican sheriff and Mayor pro tem in Washington County, Mississippi.

Born around 1829 in New York, Morgan moved to Wisconsin as a child with his family, including his brother Albert T. Morgan. During the Civil War, he joined the U.S. Army, ending the war with a rank of Colonel. In November 1865, after separating from the U.S. Army, Morgan moved to Yazoo City, Mississippi with his brother Albert but relocated to Washington County soon after. By 1869, he was the Washington County sheriff. He was a labeled a "Carpetbagger" by his opponents. By 1875, he was the acting mayor pro tem.

Morgan was married to Maria S. (Poe) Morgan, and he died on September 7, 1878 in Greenville, Mississippi.
