The 73rd Regiment, United States Colored Infantry was organized from the 1st Regiment, Louisiana Native Guard Infantry (Union) (also known as the 1st Corps de Afrique) on April 4, 1864 under the command of Lt. Col. Henry C. Merriam and served in the Western Theater in the Department of the Gulf. It was consolidated with the 96th Regiment, Colored Infantry on September 27, 1865.
