Legislation. Mississippi. An act to amend an act for the regulation, control, and support of the Penitentiary (1875)

OverviewVersions

Description

Approved on February 26, 1875, "An act to amend an act for the regulation, control, and support of the Penitentiary" outlined Mississippi's convict leasing policies without and outside of Mississippi penitentiaries. This act allowed for convict labor to create prisoners' clothing and for their subsistence. Additionally, it allowed penitentiary officers to authorize convict leasing contracts with private parties with the vague expectation that convicts be appropriately cared for or the penitentiary could terminate contracts. (Laws of the State of Mississippi, Passed at the Regular Session of the Mississippi Legislature, Convened in the City of Jackson, January 20, 1874, 107-108)
