Description
Established in 1876, Southworth & Brown was a livestock and commission merchant business owned by L. P. Southworth and Edward Brown in Chicago, Illinois. The company traded in livestock and sold various items for people for a commission. Shortly afterwards they added E. K. Herrick as a partner and renamed the company Southworth, Brown & Herrick. However, Herrick left the company in December 1878, and Southworth and Brown changed their business to its original name. In 1880, E. W. Prescott joined the company, leading to its name changing to Southworth, Brown & Prescott. The company underwent another change only months later, as Southworth and Prescott left, leading Brown to rename it Brown & Company in 1881.
