case to say that, in my judgment, the verdict was correct, & that they are entitled to the credit of having faithfully performed their duty. There is reason to believe, however, that the prisoner was attached to the girl, Lavinia, & that when he saw her tied and whipped, and heard her cries, he became suddenly enraged, & slew the father, not so much in malice towards him as through a mad passion for the daughter.
