Hd Qrs Miss. State Troops In the Field March 5th 1864 5 Mg. So. Buena Vista

To His Excelley Charles Clarke Gov &c Macon Miss.

Dear Sir,

I recd yesterday by Courier your letter of 29th Ultd and also other documents which have been distributed as requested by Courier.

Nearly all of the old Organizations have re-enlisted & a New organization will be effected in a few days if we are not disturbed.

There are only two new Companies in camp. I have reports of eight others in their own Camps & on the way here all have been ordered to this place.

Bev. Matthews has no Claim on earth to Maj. Ham's Command. I enclose an order issued June 4, 63. Under this Brig Genl Ruggles positively refused to receive any of the organizations. I could furnish you long correspondence on this Subject but 'tis unnecessary. The order was subse-quently countermanded & the status of the State Troops remained unchanged. Nothing was done by Maj. Ham to effect it.

I am Very Resply Yr. Obt Sert

S J Gholson Maj. Genl. State Forces
