Kosciusko Miss. April 20/61

Gov. J. J. Pettus

Dear Sir,

A worthy gentleman of fine medical attainments and good sense Dr C. B. Gallo-way of the village desires the post of Surgeon or Assistant Surgeon in some of the regiments of Mississ-ippi Volunteers and has requested me to write to you soliciting the appointment of him.

I must confess that I have not paid any attention to the matter and do not know who has the appointing power, whether yourself or the Military Board or the Col. of a regiment when organized, but as I am requested to write you, do so and will be glad if my friend above named could receive the ap-pointment he desires. [gap] If you have not the ap-pointment of surgeons (and I have an impression that it does not devolve on you) and it is Convenient I will thank you to cause this application to be handed to the person on whom the ^duty of^ appointment devolves.

I am with great respect In haste truly yours J. A. P. Campbell
