1 Cor.1:10.

This was addressed to a body of people believers denominated the Chh of God at Corinth, and to all similar bodies in other places, and at other times. In the words of the text, we are taught, That Union is an essential requisite in every gospel Chh.---------------- I Consider first the nature of this Nature Union. Firstly place. It is a a religious Union. In Politics, in the Sciences, and the Arts, men may have various opinions and may have defferent permits, and yet their religious standing may not be effected. But men who are; or who who would be united in the fellowship of a Church, must be

joined together, by a religious tie; excluding all schisms, and cherishing a oneness of Judgement, and of language.

2. Place. It is a union in the Doctrine of the Gospel, and in the Order and Discipline of the Chh. That the Apostles insisted on a union in doctrine in the Chhs, is evident from the stress laid on doctrine in many passages. If a minister is to teach, he must "teach no other doctrine" --- "Nothing contrary to sound doctrine" --- "Must be nourished in good doctrine" --- "Take heed to his doctrine" --- "His doctrine must be according to godliness" --- Uncorrupted doctrine. 1 Tim. 1:3, 10. 4:6, 16. 6:3. 2 Tim 4:2. Titus 2:19, 2:7, ---------------

RECTO

Inferences

1. In the formation of Churches, and the reception of members, care should be taken, that there is a union in Doctrine and in Christian practices. If it cannot be expected, that two will walk together except they be agreed, how much less can it be expected, that a greater number will? Amos 3:3. ----- --------------------------------------------------- 2. It is the duty of all in the Chh to aid to maintain this Union. Thus Paul, walk worthy of the vocation ----- Endeavouring to keep xc Eph. 4:1,3. ----- ------------------------------------------ 3. The Church, thus united may expect prosperity. Let brethren, be of one mind, live in peace, and they may expect, that the God of love and peace

will be with them. And every Church thus united, will look forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners. -----

Exegesis of Rom. XI. 24—26.

This Chap. treats on the rejection of the Jews as a national Chh. and the embodying of the gentiles believers into a gospel Chh. From the verses, which are the subject of our exegetical remarks, the following enquaries aruse.

1th What is the wild Olive tree? I answer the Gentiles v.13. I speak to you gentiles xc. The wild olive was unfruitful, unprofitable. So Gentile senners. Thy walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the heart children of disobedience.

2. What is the good olive tree? That Chh. Which was composed of converts from among the Jews; which the Apostle in verse 16th calls the first fruit. The good olive tree was that, which was cultivated in olive yard, full of fatness, whereby they

honoured God & man. Jud. 9:9. A good man is like a good olive tree in the house of God. Ps. 52:8. So as many of Isreals, who should take word and return to the Lord, should be beautiful as the the olive tree. Hos. 14:6. That Church, of primitive converts from among the Jews, was indeed as a good olive tree; steadfast in the Apostle's doctrine, and fellowship - Rooted and grounded in the faith. -----

3 When were grafts, taken from the former, and engrafted in the latter? Ans. When upon the obstinate unbelieft of the Jews, the Apostles, by divine direction, turned to the gentiles, and many believed. And instance is recorded in Acts 13:44-48. Paul & Barnabas, having preached the gospel at Antioch, and being opposed, they turned to the gentiles, and as many as where ordained to eternal life believed. See also Acts 18:6. Then tooke place, in part what the Apostle relates in
