Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919) was an American religious poet and journalist. Wilcox’s essays appeared widely in magazines during her time, and her poems appear twenty-eight times throughout the Shaker Commonplace Book. Although Wilcox was not a Shaker herself, in November of 1879 her poem “The Punished” was included in The Manifesto, a Shaker publication.
