My Dear Mr. Crawford:-
Your good letter under date October 4th has come duly
to hand and I was greatly pleased to receive it and I am hastening to
write you concerning a matter which I believe we should all join in
the urging of and we will doubtless get it if we do.
That is that, the Canadian Government should place a
suitable monument at the grave of Lorne which will be a memorial for
all four of the boys.
It is, of course, impossible for the placing of a slab
or stone at the graves of the other boys because there is no grave
for them but, a suitable bronze monument, perhaps a bronze slab cover-
ing Lorne’s grave suitably inscribed with the brief history of the
expedition and the names of all four of the boys and their dates of
birth, homes and such other matter as might be deemed suitable, would
perpetuate the memory of all four in a very suitable manner.
I have written to Mr. Stefansson about this today and
I shall write to the Galles and to the Maurers and if we all urge
this through Mr. Stefansson and any other influence we may be able to
exert, we will doubtless secure it.
I would like to have this provided and be sent to see to
the proper placing of it next summer and we can not commence too soon.
Mrs. Knight is still in a dazed condition and, although
she is a strong and a very logical woman, yet, I fear it will be a
long time before she comes back to noman because this has been such
an awful blow to her and so absolutely unexpected.
I was asked to and did speak before the Lodge of Elks
here last night on the subject not to eulogize Lorne but to give the
boys what information I could of the expedition.
The talk was requested by the people of the town who
have not had as much information as I have about it all and who have
only a vague idea of the true situation and it was a very hard ordeal
for me to pass through but it was well received.
