London, W.C.,
England.
Dear Mr. Brewer:-
I am sorry that the matters which you have
dealt with in your letter of October 20th were not discussed
when we were last together in New York and Dayton.
Mr. Anderson and I at our own expense went
to New York for the express purpose of giving you any in-
formation you might require in regard to the Wrangel Island
expedition, and if you had brought up some of the things
that you have written of in your letter, correct answers
could have been given you at once, and the possibility of
future misunderstandings entirely avoided.
Your letter of October 20th asks questions
and makes statements that properly fall into two general
classes, those referring to me personally which I will ans-
wer in this letter, and those that have to do with the
accounts of the company, which Mr. Anderson, the Secretary-
Treasurer of the Company, will deal with direct.
When you wrote your letter you were under
the impression that I was personally responsible for the
money that was transferred by Mr. Stefansson to me, amount-
ing in all to $11,000. You are quite wrong in this assump-
tion. I am not in any way responsible to you or to anyone
else for this money, and as the bulk of your letter is pred-
icated upon this incorrect assumption I must remove all doubts
from your mind as to its correctness.
On July 31st Mr. Stefansson cabled me from
London as follows:
"Cabling you Ten Thousand Dollars
to-day. Notify Noice. Await night
letter before transferring money Nome"
