V.S. 11

Farther than this, he seems to have no influence over her and I
am convinced that she needs no help to keep her money because she is as
tight with it as an old miser and has nothing in mind but to use it
for her boy and her Mother. She resents being offered assistance such
as you so kindly offered her and which the U.S.Bureau of Education has
tried to extend to her because, she says. "Why should Mr.Stefansson give
me money or why should the Bureau of Education have to help me ? I have
money of my own and I know how to use it. "

Jack Williams and his wife, of Nome have tried to get her to go on the
vaudeville stage and he would do most of the talking and show her but
she says she will never do it because she could never stand up before a
crowd of people. Jack was an engineer on the Donalson

The High School and the College and the Elks Lodge here tried to
have me bring her and just simply introduce her but, nothing doing.

I believe that, if you can possibly get hold of the diary and the
pictures Noice has of hers, that she would be glad but she will not do
anything to make him give them up.

She has implicite confidence in you and she says that you are
honest but not so with Noice and that every body says you are always
honest with the Eskimo people. She has confidence in Carl Lomen but she
says she dont care for Helen. Why, she did not tell but, we presume it
is because she is also a woman. She very graciously, however, allowed
Helen to go and help her get started off for here, bought her ticket and
sent the telegram and she seemed greatly please over it.

She says that, before the boys left Nome, she had promised to go
with them and then, she was about to back out and she met an Eskimo
woman named Mary who had been with you and when she told Mary that she
was wanted to go, and Mary heard who was in the party, she told her
that she knew Knight and if he was going, he would be good to her and
so on the strength of this, she went.

It seems they had arranged to take another family of Eskimos
with them and when the time came for sailing Ada was the only one to
show up and, as the season was already late, they decided to go with
her and not waste a day to get others. This explodes Noice's criti-
cism that they failed to take other Eskimos through incompetence.

She takes exception to a good many things she is said to
have said and done and which she declares she has never daid or done.
She says that if you write her story, it will be the truth.

Also, commenting on Noice's criticism that they did not build
houses, she says that they were never cold and never suffered with the
weather and they were satisfied with the tents and that, had they used
the drift wood necessary to build houses, there would have been none
for fuel and, as it was, they had to move camp to get more fuel.

She says that Noice's statement that her tent was tattered and
torn,is false for it was still good for a couple more years and she..as
