Dear Stefansson:-
I have just received your telegram of the
20th asking my opinion as to the desirability of having Mr.
Knight visit Toronto.
I can see no harm that would come from such
a visit but I do not know whether any particular good would be
achieved. The Crawfords unfortunately have worked themselves
into what appears to me to be a state of mind that refuses to
be reconciled. Knight would probably do more good in effecting
a reconciliation than anyone else you could suggest, but how
can you afford to pay Knight’s expenses at this time unless you
feel that if the Crawfords were reconciled it may save us from
greater expenses later on than the amount that would have to
be invested in Knight’s trip.
You will see from the enclosed general state-
ment the amount of the Company’s indebtedness. Of course, in
the item "Other Accounts" is included the Brewer account. Allan
Crawford’s salary is being paid and, therefore, does not appear
in the statement. We have to clear up Lehman and the fur account
as early as possible.
Returning to the question of Knight’s visit,
I think it would do good but I doubt if anything we can do will
put the Crawford’s on a friendly basis. I think the most that
could be expected is that a visit from Knight would stop them
from continuing to be openly hostile. If in your judgment the
expense of Knight’s trip would be justified by this modification
of their attitude, then it would be well to have him come.
I hope to be in New York from the 2nd to the
5th of February and hope to have the pleasure of seeing you then.
Yours Sincerely,
AJTaylor
