that the American claim could not very well be pressed
because of the jealousy of the Japanese who would be
fearful if America were to reach over for an island so
strategically situated with reference to Japan. The
Japanese would not have the same fear of Great Britain.

I am glad to see by the press that the American
Government are now definitely claiming Wrangell Island.
As you know, I have always been well treated in the
United States. If our wise men turn out to be unable
to see the value of the island I shall be not badly
pleased if it goes from us to the United States.
