Dear Mrs. Maurer:

I am replying to your letter of September 27th. As I see it, there is no cause for special anxiety about the men on Wrangel Island. They are as likely as you or I to be safe and well a year from now. Failure of the Teddy Bear to reach them means merely their isolation until next summer.

The reports say that it was an especially bad ice year up there. Next year we shall commence making our efforts to reach the island perhaps a month sooner than this year. The time selected this year was a little earlier than their sailing time last year, as you will remember, and as they then did not see a cake of ice, you will see that it was merely due to the season that we did not reach them now.
