Dear Maurer:
I have just come home and found both the photographs and your kind notes. I am overwhelmed with work this week but next week when I go away for a short trip my secretary will look after getting a copy of the photographs made. Thereupon she will return the originals to you and also one set of copies.
I wrote you a brief letter from the steamer and a longer one to Fred's wife, which I asked her to pass on to you.
I am coming west and have been hoping to come to see you in New Philadelphia, especially if you want me to. I had the same intentions with regard to Toronto but received a very friendly but pathetic message from Professor Crawford, saying that while he wanted to see me and while their feelings were the most friendly, he thought it would be better for his wife if I did not come just now. He sent this message in confidence, not telling his wife about it, for he said that if she knew she would be certain to want me to come.
It has just struck me that you may feel similarly about your mother. In that case please notify me at once without saying anything to her - that is if you think that a visit would bring up too many painful memories.
If I come to New Philadelphia it will probably be between the 4th and 8th of November.
