Choosing a shelf to work on

Use the "Pages needing review" button to get a list of shelves that are not yet complete. Choose one by clicking on its title, for instance "Range_03_shelf_2"

Transcribing

A Transcribe tab will appear above each page. Click on the tab to begin. You can zoom and drag to get a better look at the image.

You can create or edit transcriptions by modifying the text and saving. Each modification is stored as a separate version of the page, so that it should be easy to revert to older versions if necessary.

Don't forget to save your work often.

Registered users can also add notes to pages to comment on difficult words, suggest readings, or discuss the texts.

Transcription Conventions

  • Books: Add one line per book. Type the author (last name, first name), a pipe | character, the title, a pipe | character, the publisher, a pipe | character, then anything else that appears ( the edition, volume, or year)
  • Subtitles: If the book has a title and a subtitle, type a colon and a space after the title and before the subtitle, e.g., Heat: An Introduction
  • Unreadable titles: Make a line for this book. Indicate the Author as [unknown] and for the Title indicate the color of the book enclosed in [square brackets]. This will serve as a dummy entry until we can check the physical book.
  • Books stacked on top: Add lines for these books at end after listing all books on shelf.
  • Capitalization: Capitalize the first letter of every word and name. Do not type in all caps.
  • Illegible text: Indicate illegible text in single square brackets: [Steam?]
  • Missing author, title or publisher: Indicate in single square brackets: [none]
