Civil War letter home from Henry Albee (1 of 2)

The Charlemont Historical Society has two letters that Charlemont native Henry Albee wrote home to his mother, Martha Albee, while he served in the 52nd Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry. His letters mix stark descriptions of war-time experiences and fond recollections of life back in Charlemont. Henry died on the way home in the summer of 1863.

Ship Island Dec 19th, 1869

Dear Mother I will write you a few lines and let you know how we are. I am well and the rest of us as well as can be expected, we lost two men since we started one was from Hadley, the other from Au?ckland his name was Richmond he was nineteen years they done him up in a blanket and throwed him over board. It looked hard, but could do any better we was so far from land. We have enough to eat... [missing half a line] mutch matter, only a grand day and poor at that, it makes me think of our cities, tell father to save some till we get back. How that c?olt do this winter, give me all the news in general all who is born died and married, and how that wedding of Cynthia's went

and who ?? these who Roland carried, all who under ??? have been on the ship nine days and haven't got off yet, and don't know as we shall h???. It is a barren looking place here but I have seen some pleasant places Charles Keyes enjoyes it first rate and is well. We shall put stay here long perhaps only today I have got rid of the itch and fat. as ever I have seen the big watters and seen some really seasick, tell me how how all the folks are, and how fathers gets along with his work, give my respects to George and mira I must close, good by
