Wm W Crapo Flint Mich

Respected friend As Congress will meet in about five weeks, I discussed with our representative Buffinton, who was in town a day or two since, our Alabama claims in relation to commissioners, and the importance of having at least one N England man, and a man who understands the nature of the whaling business, and that it might hasten the actions of Congress, if the President could be seen and if practicable for him in his message to bring the subject before Congress in such manner as would be likely to give it the right direction.

In talking the subject over with G. O. C. yesterday we were united in believing that W W Crapo is the man for commissioner from N England, we are not aware that thee has an interest in any vessel wh was distroyed, and if an interest in any scrip that could be sold. Thy having been an attorney in the

case I suppose cannot have any bearing upon it now: look at this subject and let me hear from thee without much delay.

I shall write to H A Barling this evening upon this subject. When will thee be likely to be in New Bedford.

Respectfully Thy friend C R Tucker

Wm W. Crapo

Respected friend Referring to my letter of the 26th - will now say that I recd this morning a letter from Barling & Davis, stating that Wm M Evarts & C Beaman Jr were expected in New York per steamer to arrive on the 31st inst - and after consultation with them B & D thought it would be advisable to seek an early interview with Prest Grant - and that it would be important that W W Crapo should come to N York, confer with the gentlemen named above, and perhaps visit Washington with them - A H Davis also came on this moorning and we had an interview with G C C who approves of the preceding suggestions, and we

propose that thee should inform B & Davis of the earliest time at which thee may be in N York.

B & D thinks the subject of naming one or more commissioners should be early canvassed, they thought thy standing in the case as one of the counsel and, also one of the trustees would render thy appointment impracticable - but that thy services before the Commrs as counsel would be even of more service to the concern.

I can see that there are many things to be considered in this matter which cannot be named in a short Epistle of this length - please communicate with B & D.

A close money marker, and the hores distemper are the general topics- Annual meeting of Wamsutta Mills this AM - old board reelected - I wrote Dr. Potter yesterday to meet him in N York, answering his inquiries in relation to the redemption of bonds.

Very Respectfully C R Tucker
