I have already, since years ago, printed what I have to say about his life and character. in my little book called "Emerson in Concord."

It is hardly for me to choose for you. You seem distinctly to rule out a lecture which was given as a Phi Beta Kappa address

at the State Universities of Minnesota and Nebraska last June showing the strange relations of [scholar?] and soldier, how much they had in common, and how much to learn from one another.

The lecture on Henry Thoreau, the friend of my childhood, is one I care much about as I like with authority to set right the errors That have been received as truth about this noble man. I gave that lecture in a [course?] at Mr. McCulloch's (Plymouth) church in your city in 1892. Very possibly however none of your members was present.

The Cheftain of the Revolution has an [antiquarian?] and historic [interest?] and [is?] a moving story of the simple colonial life in their stirring times.

The subjects relating to [?] are interesting to me and perhaps of them for a general audience the "Relation of [?] to Life" would be the best.

I thank you for your hospitable invitation, which however I believe I must decline, as Mrs. Emerson will probably be with me and in our very brief stay we would like to be near our friends in the city.
