David Starr Jordan (1851-1931), American naturalist, educator, university president, and peace advocate. Jordan was a professor of natural history at Northwestern Christian College (later Butler University) and chairman of the department of natural sciences at Indiana University. He became president of Indiana University in 1885, and during his tenure instituted the concept of major fields of study for students. In 1891 he accepted the post of president of Stanford University, later becoming chancellor. He wrote many books on topics in natural history and education. Jordan also became a tireless proponent of international peace, delivering lectures all around the country. In 1925 he was awarded the Raphael Herman prize of $25,000 for the best working plan to create and maintain international peace.
