SALAZAR, FANNY Z JAN 7 1903

Majestic Hotel Central Park West 72d Street New York City

January 7th 1903 -

My dearest Friend

Only yesterday evening I received your long, kind, most welcome letter of last December 29th. The post mark however is from Janyary 6th from Indianapolis, so I presume you kept it expecting to enclose Mr. Bryan's answer! It is all [?] about yourself, but I cannot think Mrs. Avery could not find the time to see me, when I was in Philadephia! It is too bad! I have brought my five children but for & with them I always went on with my work & never neglected social [intros?] nor friends! Enough of this. I am sorry I cannot afford the journey to see you and back here from where I must sail for Italy on the 27th [?] I hope! I think you for your kind [?] City. I wish I could have accepted as it would have been important for our work that we might have talked over much I had to tell you.

Mrs. Howe [?] National Council of Italian Women my dear I can tell you this for Countess Govenor has been asking me to do something. This minister as I have been even lecturing on the need of being organized for 1904 to meet in Berlin.

[Left margin: P.S. Pray excuse this horrible blah!]

So I can no more call Countess Govener the President of a Council we have not, [?] place the Lake of Como in Rome!!

I have it corrected, please and trust me to be doing more for the Council than you even think! I have been lecturing about its importance introducing it in all my lectures and I seriously believe that "The Italian Review" will one day be the official organ of this association as the most important magazine started and edited by an old promoter of women's progress. The Italian movement is limited to the federation of women's work in Rome, not even all Italy! But I have plans and means to do much there and hope to do so soon. Meanwhile it would be absurd for me who knows the truth to speak or write about an Italian Council of Women which does not exist. I do not know who had you put up that address when in London in 1899 no Italian was present - it was Mrs. [?] who spoke for us. I was then obsessed with the sale of my proper and moving to Rome the whole family. I have gone through more than you can even fancy! I think it will be useful to have you enclose circulars of my work in your papers so will send you - prepaid - a thousand copies for you to distribute also in the United State and suggest our doing all the needed practises at Dresden or Berlin this year to have our Council affiliated to the International Council. But I cannot give you an idea of the

difficulties we meet in Italy about this work. I am sorry my first [?] letter from New York did not reach you! It is too bad. Now I stop here and wish you to send me a good letter for Mrs. Humphreys [Jaffrey?] or any New York lady who can help my work. I must by all means incorporate my company to go on with my work and I know from my own plans how important it will be for the International Council of Women to use it as a link between all English reading people. I will repeat any lecture on Modern Italy again in New York and would like Mrs. Jaffrey to hear what I say of the International Council of Women!

I am sure that if not before - we will meet in Berlin next year. Meanwhile be sure that far or new we are indeed true loyal old friends, ever united in our efforts so earnestly pursued for human and social progress!

Aff'ly Yours Fanny Zampini Salazar
