Mrs. May Wright Sewall, Indianapolis, Ind.

Dear Mrs. Sewall: I [duly?] received your favor of the 27th [?], but some of the enclosures which you proposed to send me have not yet come to hand, among them the letters related to the colored teacher whom you wished to attend the Congress as a delegate. You have not overestimated my interest in the Congress or my appreciation of its importance as a factor in hastening the good time coming, but you have overestimated the length & fullness

of my purse. It is, I regret to say, simply impossilbe for me, with the many claims & demands upon me, to indulge in the luxury of being a Patron of the Congress, or of contribuing to the expenses of the colored delegate, & I must therefore beg you to accept the will for the deed, with my best wishes for the success of your gathering.
