I called on Mrs Viele this afternoon and our conversation recalled to me that charming evening at Mrs [MacKensees?] where I had the pleasure of meeting you and also that you shared my appreciation of Mrs. Viele and her romantic love of the orient.

I was astonished to learn from her that she has not yet been decorated by the sultan and that several other women in America have recently received decorations from him.

I remember you said you might have some influence and would willingly exert it in her behalf, so I am writing you unbeknown to Mrs. Viele, and hope it is not going to annoy you. I presume her decoration has not been applied for, and

don't know enough about such things to know who whould make the application, but presume it is Hakky Beys. Do you know him well enough to ask him to do it? I really think Mrs. Viele deserves it. She has worked so disinterestly and with such whole heartiness in behalf of Turkey. Not only in Chicago but here and everywhere.

Mrs Black and myself speak very often of the delightful evening we spent together in your society and hope
