GARDENER, HELEN H. Feb 12, 1893

Locust Lodge Ky Feb 12 1893

My dear Mrs. Sewall,

When Gen. Thomas A. Harris (whom I am visiting) returned from Louisville to this, his country home, last night he brought me your very cordial, charming and unexpected telegram and letter.

It would be a pleasure to be able to respond that I can do exactly what you wish but as I am West on a

business trip - verifying material for my next literary work - I am compelled to govern my next movements by what I learn in each succeeding place. Before I came here I had expected to be compelled to stop several days in your city. It now looks as if in one day I can do all that I shall need to do.

However, since I wish to talk with you of the World's Fair Anciliary work and of what would be expected of me in case I accept the two or three appointments and invitations which have come to me, I shall if you will permit, come to your house during [day?] hours that I shall not be compelled to spend in looking up certain legal points while in Indianapolis. Then we can understand each other and I can be sure of what both you and Mrs [Frohr Avery?] want me to do.

I shall not, however, be able to accept your kind and tempting invitation to attend your weekly reception since I shall merely "stop off" in traveling gown and in my "business habit of thought." My plan now is, to leave Louisville for Indianapolis on the P.C.C. & St.L. road at 7:31 a.m. Thursday reaching Ind. at 11.15 a.m. I can, if you wish, drive directly to your house and while lunching with you we can chat about women and her work [&c.?]

During the afternoon I shall have to see [?] gentleman of a legal turn of mind. Then, again, I shall be free to return to you. I can stay untill the 11.10 p.m. train on Ind. Tol. & Dt. Line (in case it has a sleeper

for Toledo, or if not until the 6.20 p.m. same line if it only has a through sleeper). If there is a better line leaving your for Toledo I can take it. This is the only one I can learn of [hire?] which gets me to Toledo in the day time which is important. I wish to be there Friday.

Unless you wire me (to the Galt House where I shall be Wednesday) telling me that this will not be convenient to you I shall [take?] a carrage directly to your house. In case my plans are ^not changed after I get to Louisville (where some of the papers are to be finished) I shall reach you Thursday at 11.15 a.m. If my plans are changed I shall wire you. Until then, with thanks for your courtesy, I remain Very Sincerely Helen H. Gardener
