My dear Mrs. Sewall I was very glad to receive your letter this morning. And to read all your kind & pleasant plans for me!
But slas! I have been obliged to postpone my return to America until /98. Many thins have happened since I wrote to you just a year ago.
Chief among them has been

the illness & dealth of my brother in law. And therefore I could not leave England this winter on my sister's account.
? I have just ? appointed Art Lecturer [?] Oxford [?] [?] extension and that will keep me busy after [?] for several months. I gave 2 lectures at his summer meeting of the University Ext at Oxford in August to an enormous [?]) And [?] are deep in a big book on the history of french art from the 11th cent! This I was asked to [?]

When I came back from America. And though I have been hard at work on it for a year, I fear there are six good months of work before me ere it can be finished. I am immensely interested in it. But it takes all my time & strength to do it as it should be done. I spent a delightful month working at it in Paris this summer. And there I found as usual all the ["s"?] more than ready & willing to help each in his own department. But such a work needs the most careful research & extreem accuracy

if it is to be of the slightest value. And all this takes an agonizing amount of time! I am therefore planning to remain firmly fixed in our blessed old conservative country till next autumn and then I hope very much to find my way back to America for a [fresh?] lecture campaign and surely in the next summer I shall be [?] [?] you & tell you what I bring in my hand to my dear second country. I have not yet quite [?] [?] what my [fresh?] course of lectures will be probably I shall have a short course on the Renaissance

of art - architecture - sculpture & painting in France in the 16th cent.
In any case the lecture or lectures wil be illustrated with lantern slides. I have had a superb series made for the French art lectures but Isahah also have some attractive single lectures and it will be a great pleasure to give you one of my series at Indianapolis as you so [?] suggest. I shall certainly be at Cincinnati some time during my visit and hope to have other engagements
