My dear Miss Sewall

Your letters were received and I much appreciate the kind invitation to be present at the dinner to Miss Anthony I should most certainly be present & it would [marked through] give me the most sincere pleasure to respond to the ? "? our ? in Public as in Private life" for the ? is in whole. I [marked through] warmly concur & I neer enter the greatest delight in being able to do anything to slow my deep appreciation of Miss Anthony's eminent soriees to a just cause But the death of my ? which has just occured will make it quite impossible. I beg you will express to Miss Anthony, & to those who have charge of this ? ? to her ?-? absence will not be due to any lack of zeal or interest It is a matter of ? ? regret that I cannot be with you Yours ?
