5, [193] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1792, 1792, March, 1, Froze the snow & ground hard-some clouds, moderate weather and thawing. South wind. clear evening. I went to Smith's Shop at Adams's Mill & bo't sundries. C.Taylor got there after me and we returned together. I came home to dinner. Began to use last bag of Flour. After dark heard wild geese cry, flying to Northwest. 2, Clouded in the night, a little rain about 3 o'clock in the morning- no frost, wind South & Smoky. Hung up the Gammons & Shoulders which were resalted the 31, January. Moses went to work at C.Taylor's. John Taylor & Felix Gilbert jr walked here from Capt Burnley's in the evening- Fine evening. About half the ground bare at night. 3, Very little frost, a few clouds but fine day and the snow went off much. Went with my father to Capt Burnley's, James Taylor, Ch's Taylor, J.Taylor jr, John Taylor, his family & Felix Gilbert jun'r dined there. 4, [SUNDAY] A little frost- cloudy day but not cold. J.Taylot & Reuben Taylor dined here- Had a few Turnep Tops for dinner. 5, There was thunder, lightning and shower of rain began about 2 o'clock this morning. Dark cloudy morning. 6, This day being appointed by ColT.Barbour and Wm Webb to settle some accounts between them & they having chosen me one of the persons, I rode to Court house the s'd Barbour & Webb were there, but only Capt May Burton & I of the Arbitrators being met and it being suggested by Mr.Webb that Major Madison is concerned. It was agreed to defer the settlement till they heard from Maj'r Madison. Dined a tNooe's, my father, Col'o Madison, B.Winslow, Capt Burnley, Bellfield Cave &c. Col Barbour and Mr.Webb paid the expences. A few drops rain fell in the morning, but cleared about 10 o'clock except flying clouds- rather windy though fine day and Snow went off considerably. Heard Frogs. 7, Fine day- very slight frost in morning- Frogs crying. Snow chiefly gone except North hill sides and shady places. In evening I walked to Jas.Taylor's- got a Copy of claim allowed Wm Taylor for hire of his Carpenters at Barracks. Jas Bell & Wm Mansfield were at the office. 8, Hazy weather but not cold- no frost this morning. C.Taylor here and got several kinds of seeds- I offered to allow him 10/- for 2 doz Bottles(which are here) that he lent us some time ago, which he agreed to let me have at that price. He dined here. Rain began before day and continued with North wind all day- Most of the Snow is melted, it is now Eight weeks since it fell, and it covered the ground close for seven weeks. Reuben Mallory came here and I paid [21/-] him 21--for weaving at Thomas Mallory's 36 yards Cotton Cloth at 6d & knitting pr Stockings 3/- = 21/- My father also paid him for weaving 152 yds Linen & Woolen cloth at 4d and Knitting 1 pair Stockings 3/- done at T.Mallory (after deducting 14/6) the balance he paid 39/2. 9, Cloudy but without rain till about sunset a very little. I walked with my father to C.Taylor's and dined there- His children have the whooping-cough. Betsy has it worst, the rest seem not to regard it. 10, Began to rain soon after midnight- some snow with it early in morning, continued all day to rain and mist. My father complains of being a little unwell- 11, [SUNDAY] Cleared last night early- the ground a little frozen this morning- fine morning but soon changed to windy with flying clouds & some spits of snow. J.Taylor was here in evening, said J.Taylor jr had cut his leg. 12, Smartfrost, cold windy day, the great mountains hid in parts by Clouds of snow yesterday and again to day- some spits, I was told, fell. 13, I replanted each trees where missing in young orchard. Fine morning but changed to windy tho' not cold. My father rode to Court house, went by J.Taylor's Uncle Taylor's and Rob't Taylor's & got home by noon. I went in the evening to J.Taylor's and got a small Greyheart Cherry tree, planted it in th eyard toward the Stable.
