1797,
July,
25, Tuesday, Warm, A very light rain in evening.J.Taylor,John Pendleton & C.Taylor dined with me.J.Pendelton's wife called, going to Mrs.Burnley's-Mrs.Gilden had 1/2 Barrel Corn.
26, Fair. Had 12 Hhd Corn removed. Thomas Proctor came here & dined. Spoke for 15 lb. Wool. Had Turnep patch by Nursery sown. Ternep seed T.Barbour sent sown with Cabbage seed in part about the middle-Summer & Winter Turnep(mostly summer) in remainder.
27, Clouded & a very little rain before day-a little in mornng-And a good shower in evening-fell hasty. Thos.Proctor sent negro woman & got 15 lb Wool. Wm.Standard & son,Beverley,came here to breakfast.W.S.looked at my sheep & said he intends to buy 40 at 10/-,I to take choice of 6 & he to choose 40 after.No positive bargain to bind either party. They went on to Spotsylvania after breakfast- He left a bond & desired me to send it to Clk to issue writ.I gave bond to J.Pendleton who was here in evening & brought a Coverlet his wife had made for me.
28, Fog in morn. The greatest rain I have known for more than a year in evening- with north wind. James McNeal came here early in morning- I paid him $3.7.1. in full of his account for work done at Hay Taliaferro's Shop to 1st Oct'r 1796- J.Pendleton & wife went by to Reu Taylor's, and I went after- We dined there-also Wm.Quarles & Wm.Pollock- Reu Taylor went with them to shew *Langham's land &c- they were driven in by the heavy rain- Ralph Quarles & John Pollock with them- the rain abated about sunset when I came home- the others ment'd staid at R.Taylor's-[* This land formerly owned by Hubbard Taylor-WKA]
29, Fair- a few drops rain afternoon- ___Bibb got 17 lb.Wool & paid 21/3.I find the Corn much laid with the wind & rain of yesterday & the Corn ground much washed I went to J.Taylor's to dinner, J.Pendleton & family, Maria Lilly & Nancy Smith there. Reu.Taylor was here before noon. I gave him Summer & Winter Turnep seed. Let M.Biggers have leather to soal a pair shoes.
30, Sunday, Clouds & sunny before noon. Heavy rain in evening,South wind & hasty. corn broke by the wind. I staid at home-J.Pendleton & family went from J.Taylor's t Culpeper- J.Taylor jr & wife came up from the Springs to his father's Wm Stewart sent Daniel & got 5 1/4 lb. butter in my pot.
31, Cloudy day, with showers of small rain. I staid at home till after dinner. I then walked to James Taylor's- J.Taylor jr & wife there. Nancy & Miss Lilly gone to T.Bells.
August,
1, Tuesday, Clouds & light showers. C.Taylor came here in the evening with Joshua Parker,G.C.Taylor's Overseer who is come for Tom,who being called to the door, said he wou'd be prepared against Friday next-J.Taylor came to where Tom & Frank were sawing,but not to the house.
1, Wednesday, Some clouds in mornng- Fair noon- A heavy rain from sunset till in night- I was caught with J.Taylor & Reu.Taylor in a rain above the Court house about 6 o'clock but that did not extend below the Ct House- I went to a Barbecue at Wm.Smith by Blue run, there was a large & genteel company- Reuben Taylor stopped here in the rain & staid.
3, Wet,cloudy morning,some rain about noon. R.Taylor went away after breakfast.
4, Clouds & some rain in morn, fair evening. I went to C.Taylor's in evening. Paid Sally Taylor 15/- for making vests & mending shirts. S.Burnley there. G.C.Taylor got to C.Taylor's in evening. I took Plank Bee-hive,about 2 1/2 Gallons honey.
5, Fog in morn. Thunder & Rain in evening. G.C.Taylor sent a note by Joshua Parker by whom I sent him 10 dollars. Let M.Biggers have Turnep seed to sow by his house. I went to C.Taylor's- J.Taylor,J.Taylor jr & wife, Nancy Taylor, Reu. Taylor,G.C.Taylor & Maria Lilly, dined there.
6, Sunday, Rainy morning, cloudy evening. I staid at home. Intended to have gone to Reuban Taylor's but the rain prevented. M.Biggers & wife went to Louisa to see his mother,sick.
7, Thin clouds in morning and day but no rain, cool for the season. Rob't Moore & Phil Barbour(of James) came here after breakfast,left a letter for G.CTaylor
