DIARY OF fRANCIS TAYLOR, 1797.
1797
December,
29, Sharp frost-Fair serene and moderate. I went to D. Triplett's Store - Bought 2 pr
Blankets & Sundries for self & E. C[hew], amount £4.19.5. Called on my return
at Mr. Shepherd's Shop and had my mare's shoes removed - paid 1/3. Reu Taylor was
here to day - (Frank told me).
30, Great white frost- a little hazy-mild. James Sebree brought the blankest and
kettle I bought at Triplett's yesterday- Gave him a bottle Whisky. Sary com-
plained of being worse- I sent for C. Taylor, he did not come but sent some
medicine.
31, Sunday, Thin clouds, or hazy, mild- In night rained a little. I went to J. Taylors'
T. Barbour's wife & Nancy Taylor were at home & E. Chew- Mrs James dined there.
C. P. Howard & wife were at J. Taylor's after dinner. Mr. Barbour's Joe brought me
a jug and __ Gallons of Molasses from Blair's - got here in the night.

This year has been a dry one, particularly before Wheat Harvest - afterwards some
heavy, hasty, washing rains: The Autumn & winter dry - In general good Crops of
Wheat & rye and the grain excellent- Tolerable crops of Indian Corn, in the
middle parts of the State- Very good below and poor above- Very Cold Season (gen
erally) since 15 November, tho' but little snow or rain.

16, Hay Taliaferro, do. Suky Conway.
24, Sary's child, John died.
April 3, Alexander Shepherd's wife died at Tho's Bell's.
May 23, Polly Winslow died (of smallpox) in Fred'g.

31, Mrs. Mary Moore, wife of Maj'r W[illiam]. Moore, died.
Tho's Catlett died in Culpeper the —instant
June 17, Andrew Shepherd had a son born.
Joseph Thomas Sen'r died about this time.
Sept. Maj'r W. Lindsay died at Newport R. Island 2, Sept'r
2, Sary had a son born.
Oct'r 5, F[rancis] S[tubbs]. Taylor married Miss Lindsay.
Nov'r Mr. Thomas Walker of Albemarle died.

Ambrose Clark married —— Thomas.
Dec'r 7, J. Taylor jr had a daughter born. [This must have been Emily-PFT]
