of the members of the Faculty of Arts, and by the Medical Pro-
fessors, more particularly the Statute respecting the conditions
of the tenure of the Professorial Office, as differing from the
rule observed in the University of Edinburgh and the other
Scottish Universities. Notwithstanding, however, the applications
of the parties complaining, the Board of Trustees resolved to
adhere to the rules which had been adopted, and unfortunately
Professor Lawson thought himself in consequence justifies in
resigning his Chair in the Univeristy, very greatly to the regret
both of the Trustees, and of all his Colleagues, and accepted
a similar Chair in Dalhousie College, Halifax.

The Revd Dr. Machar of St. Andrew's Church had been
one of the original Trustees named in the Charter, a number of
the Board from its commencement, and for six years Principal of
the College. His death, on 7th February 1863, was a subject
of general mourning throughout the City, and Church to which
he belonged, and the Trustees of the University specially recorded
their deep sense of the loss which they had thus sustained in
the following Minute of the 26th of the same month.

"The Trustees agree to record their deep sense of
the loss which they have sustained by the death of
the Revd John Machar D.D. and one of the Trustees originally
