$32,000 to $10,700 and the annual interest on it in the same
proportion from $1920 to $856, together with the further and like
reduction of $1000 on the value of the stock held for the Scholarships
of the Ladies Association of St. Andrew's Church Toronto, and of the Ladies
of Kingston. By the latter, the withdrawal of the Parliamentary Grant,
the grant for this year having been announced to be the last, and only
after urgent representations included in the Estimates, a much more for-
midable annual deficit of $5000 had to be faced, and the College
would evidently be placed in a most critical position, unless the party
in power could be induced to alter a policy so opposed to the best interests
of the country, and so unjust to Institutions which at great expense had
done, and were doing, so much to promote them. In these circumstances
renewed exertions were made by the Trustees, in conjunction with the
authorities of Victoria and Trinity Colleges, to obtain, if possible, a
reversal of the decision of the Provincial Cabinet and their support-
ers in Parliament, in refusing aid to higher Education. In the mean-
time, in the view of one main source of support of the Department
of Arts being, as there was reason to fear, ---- finally withheld,
and of the whole of this trying condition of affairs, the authorities
of Queen's were under the necessity of suspending their efforts to secure
the establishment of an additional Professor in the Depart-
ment of Theology.
