while thanking him for his service during the past
winter, felt that more consideration was needed before
making a permanent choice.

A committee was appointed to
consider the subject with power to appoint Mr.
McGowan and to call a special meeting of the
Board of Trustees if thought advisable in the
autumn.

At the special meeting of the Board,
the question of the appointment of Dr. Williamson's successor was also considered.

For this appointment to the
Chair of Physics three gentlemen had applied, but
after consideration of their testimonials and considerable
discussion, it was resolved that the Principal should
proceed to Great Britain, and after personal interviews
with the applicants, make the selection, the Trustees
finding themselves to sanction and confirm his
choice at the annual meeting in April.

The Principal accordingly crossed without delay
to Britain on this mission, in which Dr. Snodgrass
kindly co-operated and the result was the appointment
to the Chair of Physics of Professor D.H.
Marshall, M.A. T.R.E.E. for some years Professor in
the Imperial College at Tokio, Japan
