immediate steps were taken to provide for the raising of
the quarter of a million which the plan demanded.

The people of Kingston with generous promptitude appointed
a representative committee to raise from $50,000 to
$70,000 of the required sum, while encouraging letters from
Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Renfrew and elsewhere assured
the University authorities of their willingness to cooperate in
the proposed effort. The magnitude of the scheme was not
at all under-rated by its authors, - the friends of Queen's
had already come so nobly to her help that it was with
some apprehension that this fresh appeal was made for
assistance. But the gravity of the situation justified the
step taken, and as events proved, the confidence of the
authorities was not misplaced. At the annual meeting
of the Trustees, on the 26th of April, a special session was
held for the consideration of the private circular that had
been sent to the members of the Board, and which
it was proposed to send to those interested in the welfare
of Queen's. The present situation of Queens, and the
plans proposed, as well as the means to be taken to carry
them out were set forth at length, and the circular was
endorsed by the Trustees in the following resolution.

Resolved, that the Trustees heartily endorse the scheme
and commend it to all those interested in the University.
They are encouraged by the enthusiastic action taken
by the citizeans of Kingston to raise $50,000 and
