Queen's were assembeld to receive His Excellency in Convocation
Hall where Chancellor Fleming presented him, on behalf of
the Council, the Trustees and the Senate, with an address to
which Lord Stanley made a cordial response, expressing a
desire to return when the classes were in session. After being
shown through the College Buildings, Lord and Lady Stanley
chose places in the grounds for trees which were planted in their
name on October 17th (See Q.C.J. Vol XVI pp. 7-8).

During the first part of the session, the Principal
was absent on his tour round the world. On December 22nd
he returned to Kingston completely restored to health, to meet
with an enthusiastic reception at the hands of the students,
who met him at Sharbott Lake, and escorted him back to
the city, where a public reception was given him in the
City Hall (See Q.C.J. Vol. XVI pp. 34-38). On January 11th,
after the opening of College, the Principal was the recipient
of a hearty welcome in Convocation Hall, under the auspices
of the Alma Mater Society, when addresses were presented to
him from the Trustees and from the Students, to which he
responded (See Q.C.J. Vol. XVI pp 48-52).

Preliminary steps were taken during
this session towards obtaining legislation for the further defining
and extending the powers of the University Council. At the
autumn meeting of the Board the Committee on Legislation
presented the following report. 1. Besides the
