take charge of the departments of assaying and minerology.
Such a man has been formed in Mr. H. Nicol B.A. of 1883
Mr Nicol took a post-graduate course in Queen's and
acted as tutor in Botany and in Chemistry. He subsequently
taught as Science Tutor in the Collegiate Institue at Guelph
with remarkable success. He is now prosecuting his studies in
Germany. Next year he would be ready for the appointment
suggested and his salary could not be less than $1000 a
year, the amount received by him at Guelph. Something
more is needed to complete the Staff. The Department of
Education now requires specialists in Science for High School
or Collegiate Insitute teachers and they have added Zoology
to the curriculum. At present Mr Fowler is the only man
we have in Botany, Geology and Zoology. It is desireable
to relieve him of the last as soon as possible. A new man would
then be needed for Zoology including Comparative Anatomy,
Physiology and Embryology. As medical students would
attend this department the fees would go a great way to
the payment of the salary. With regard to the Financial
condition of the University little additional information
can be given to that obtained by the Trustees at the Annual
Meeting last April - This report was carefully considered and
after much discussion it was decided to elect Dr Dyde to the
Chair of Mental Philosophy and Mr Macnaughton to the
Chair of Greek. These important steps
were not taken without some feeling of hesitation
