classrooms, small but well selected libraries including books
of reference. Students using these are supplied with
keys, and are allowed to read and write in the classrooms
when classes are not being held there. Already there are
candidates in ten out of the fourteen honour classes.

In English: Mathematics, Physics, Philosophy and two
or three other departments our staff is now as complete
as can be reasonably desired. When the Carruthers Hall
is finished we shall also be in a position to do our work
satisfactorily in chemistry (practical and theoretical) in
astronomy and assaying. As accomodation will not
be entirely lacking it is for the Trustee to consider whether
steps should not be taken to establish a department of
civil engineering. But the Natural Science side of the
University needs strengthening more than any other.
Professor Fowler has done admirable work and he has
been assisted by a tutor, but I trust that some further
assistance will be given to him at once, even though
the doing so involves financial risk, on account of our
not having a revenue equal to ependiture. It was
agreed, in accordance with the Prinicpal's suggestion, to
elect Rev. J. Fowler, Professor of Natural Science at a
salary of $1200 a year, and to appoint a Fellow in
Zoology at $300 it being understood that the fellowship
should be awarded to an Honour Student
