longer period than three years. The appointment
was left in the hands of the Local Trustees.

The Building of the new Science Hall was
delayed for some time while new tenders were sent in,
the first estimates having all been too high for the funds
at the disposal of the Trustees, who had decided that
the cost must not exceed of $17000. The first sod was
turned for the site of the new building on Dec 18th
and the foundation stone was laid on the 29th of
April. From that time the work continued without
interruption.

The great event of the session was the
celebration of "Queen's Jubilee". At a session of
the Univesity Council in November it was pointed out
that the first public meeting to take practical steps to
establish the University, was held in St Andrew's Church,
Kingston Dec 18th 1839, and it was agreed that the day
in question was the most fitting for celebrating the semi-
centennial of the university. The celebration succeeded
beyond all expectations. The stirring and anxious
times through which Queen's had recently passed, had
kindled a warmer feeling of loyalty and affection in the
friends and graduates than ever before, and they flocked
from all parts to share in the celebration. The
