came from Macmillan and Co. (Lond: Eng)

Several prizes in money were also offered this year
for various subjects by Lord Stanly LL.D., Dr Robson
Roose, LL.D. (Lond.Eng), Dr Rivers Wilson, Ph.D. of
OXford Eng., James Johson of Ottawa and A.G. McBean,
B.A., Montreal.

The University sustained two very severe
losses during this winter by the removal of death of the
Hon Alexander Morris, Chairman of the Board of Trustees;
and of the Rev. Dr. Bain. Mr Morris after the
death of his father in 1858 was elected a member of the
Board of Trustees. For upwards of thirty successive
years the University continued to enjoy the advantage of
his constant efforts for its welfare, accompanied by many
generous gifts, and on the death of the Hon John
Hamilton he was unanimously chosen to succeed him
as Chairman of the Board.

On the death of Dr Bain
too the Council felt that they had lost a true friend.
Throughout his connection of 47 years with the University
as studnet trustee and member of Council, he
had been in various ways and at all times the stedfast
and zealous friend of the College, and had been the means
of greatly promoting its interests. The Council
recorded the deep sense of the loss which they
