the practice of the universities in the old world, that a
Chancellor should be appointed for life, yet in the case
of Mr Fleming, a fresh election every three years was
only an occasion to offer a fresh testimony of confidence
and affection to one who had always shown himself so
stedfast a friend of Queen's. This was the fifth time that
Mr Fleming had been elected, twice after a contest and
three times unanimously. The following is Chancellor
Fleming's reply to Mr McIntyre's letter informing him that
he had been re-elected to the office of Chancellor in Queen's.

Sir, I have the great satisfaction to receive your
favour of yesterday's date conveying the information that
at a meeting of the Council held on the 15th inst. the
members were pleased to select me Chancellor of Queen's
for another term of three years.

Allow me to ask you to convey to the
Council the expression of my high appreciation of this
renewed mark of confidence.

I wish I could feel myself
worthy of the distinguished honour which has for the
fifth time been conferred upon me by the University Council.
