Treasurer's report showed an accumulated deficit of 9,100.
That for the past year was $1000, and it would have
been much more but that in January the Temporalities
Board paid in full arrears due by it to the
College. This condition of affairs was partly
accounted for by the additions to the staff by the lessened
rate of interest, continued deficits in the General
Assembly's College Fund and failure of some subscribers
to pay either the principal of their subscriptions
to the Jubilee Fund or interest thereon.

The College sustained a severe loss
this year in the death of Rev Dr Cook of Quebec
the first Chancellor of the University, and one of its
oldest friends. Dr Cook was prominent among the
founders of Queens: he was largely instrumental in
procuring her Charter, and in twenty five years was
an active member of the Board. At a critical
time of the history of Queen's he filled the office of
Principal for two years and in 1877 was unanimously
elected her first Chancellor. The Board passed a resolution
expressing their sorrow at their own loss and
their deep sympathy with the family of the deceased.
