[temporal]ities Board. About four years before, these professors
had sent in a claim to the Trustees that their salaries
received from the University should be paid in full,
in addition to the amount received by them from the
Temporalities Board. For various reasons the matter
had been deferred till April 1891, when they presented
a memorial to the Board, urging their claims. A
Committee was appointed with Mr. Justice MacLennan
as convenor, to look into the matter, and to report to
the Board. The committee had various interviews
with the petitioners during the winter of 1891-92 when on
the latter asking for further time for deliveration, the
committee was adjourned sine die. During the
next session however the matter was again brought
up, when the Committee finally agreed upon their
report, which was presented to the Board at the annual
meeting. The Committee having most carefully
gone into the claims of the petitioners, expressed it
as their opinion that the claim was based upon a
misapprehension. The petitioners apparently thought
that the annuities received from the Termporalities Board
were their private property. The Committee shewed
that this was an error; that the clergy reserve was
the property of the Church, and could only be paid
out for service done to the Church; that the
