[con]sideration of services rendered by her to the Church; and
that this the only ground on which the payments
could be made by the Temporalities Board. The
Report traced the course of proceedings which had
taken place, since the first commutation of the salaries
of Clerical Professors in 1853 to the present time. It
shewed that the grants to professors which had
been withdrawn in 1865 were renewed in 1875, mainly
through the efforts of Principal Snodgrass, and
with a view to enlarge the salaries of these professors
whose salaries were inadequate because of the financial
straits of the college, and that it was intimated at
the time to the professors concerned that the increase
was dependent on the renewed grant from the
Temporalities Board. The conclusion of the Committee
then were, that (a) The Temporalities Fund
and the allowances made therefore are not private
property, and the annuities can be properly paid to, or received
by anyone, only for work or service rendered
either directly or indirectly to the Church. (b) The
College and the Clerical Professors therein have been and
are doing such work. (c) the restoration of the annuities
to the professors in 1875 was for the very purpose of
assisting the College to increase the salaries of the
Clerical Professors. (d) But for the restoration
of the annuities the increase could
