Fowler was relieved of part of his work. On the other side
the School of Mines benefitted financially by receiving all
fees for the three departments.

The establishment of this School of Mining
led the Senate to consider the establishment of a Faculty
to give education in other branches of Applied Science.
After much deliberation and considering of ways and means,
it was decided at the Annual Meeting of Trustees to establish
such a faculty and to appoint Prof. Dupuis as its first
Dean. In view of this action, it was decided that
Professor Dupuis should during the summer months visit
Schools of Applied Science in America and elsewhere in
order to learn and report what additional teaching staff
and appliances would be required for the efficient working
of a Faculty of Practical or Applied Science.

The installation of Dr Knight as
Professor of Biology took place at the autumn convocation.
The establishment of this chair as one of the connecting
links between the Faculties of Arts and Medicine was one
of the good results which had come out of the union of
the Royal College to the University, for without that
union the appointment of a Professor of Animal Biology
would have been impossible. In other respects the
union had been for the advantage of the students and
professors in Medicine.
