from the lowering of interest the financial condition of
the University was in some respects more satisfactory
than for some time. The deficit for the year 1893-94
was only $535, while the recipts from the Assembly's College
fund showed an increase. The accumulated deficit
of past years however still remained and could only
be wiped out if the overdue interest could be collected, and
if the sum of $4000 a year from the Assembly's College
Fund were attained. The Trustee's found themselves
hampered in matters requiring increased expenditure.
They were unable to comply with a request from Professor
Fletcher for an increase in salary. While desiring to
express their grateful recognition of the services of Professor
Fletcher to the university, the present condition of their
finances absolutely forbade the raising of salaries.

The proceedings at Convocation were
rendered interesting this year by the presence of the
Governor General of Canada and of Lady Aberdeen, who,
both showed much interest in the proceedings.
Addresses were presented to both Lord and Lady Aberdeen,
who delivered addresses in reply. Lady Aberdeen also
addressed the graduating class of girls. Lord Aberdeen
received the honorary degree of L.L.D. The same
degree was bestowed on His Honour John. C. Shultz,
Governor of Manitoba, President Loudon, of
the University of Toronto, Hon H.G. Joly, of Quebec.
