appointing him Professor of Astronomy and Director of
the Observatory. It was largely due to him, aided by Mr.
J.A. Macdonald, Dr. Dickson and Dr. Stewart that a
Medical Faculty was established in Queen's, and the
erection of the observatory, and all the subsequent improvements
and additions to the instruments resulted almost
entirely from his exertions.

Dr. Williamson bequeathed
the balance of his estate, after the payment of certain legacies,
to Queen's, and shortly after the funeral the
Chancelllor issued a circular, suggesting that the Trustees
should be asked to allow the legacy, amounting to about
$1000, to form the nucleus of a fund, to be supplemented
by voluntary contributions, sufficient to establish a fellowship
or scholarships to be known by the name of Dr.
Williamson. This proposal was taken up by the
students and Alumni Association, and nearly five
hundred dollars additional were contributed during the
winter. The Trustees cordially gave their consent to this
scheme for perpetuating the name of the beloved professor.

In the meantime the students had collected among themselves
the necessary funds for a brass tablet to be placed in
Convocation Hall, which was unveiled at the April Convocation,
and which bore the following inscription,

" In loving memory of Professor James Williamson, D.D.
long known as "The Students Friend". Born
in Edinburgh, Scotland, October 19th, 1806 entered
