influential for good his life, were exercised with special
zeal on behalf of his Alma Mater. At more than one
serious crisis in her history, his generous hand, and gifted
mind, and hopeful heart, were signally instrumental both
in warding off disaster from the University, and in
helping to make it the Educational power it now is in
our country. In his loss a vacancy is made in our
Board which it will be hard to fill. The Board would
express its deepest sympathy with the bereaved family and
relatives of our departed friend and entertain the hope that
his noble example may be a great incentive to us all to
imitate him who walked so faithfully in the footsteps of
his Lord and ours."

The death of Dr. Saunders following
as it did so closely on that of Dr. Fenwick, was
felt much in the city, where he was much beloved, but
especially in the Medical Faculty and in the University
Council, where his clear judgment and well balanced
mind were particularly valued. The students showed
their affection for their two late professors, by subscribing
among themselves for portraits of them, to be placed in
Convocation Hall at the ensuing April Convocation.
The gaps in the teaching staff of the Medical Faculty
were temporarily filled during this session by Drs. Garrett
and Kilborn, but the deaths of two of the leading
physicians necessitated a re-arrangment of the
