the basement containing bathrooms, offices and some
mechanical arrangements, the first floor the mechanical
laboratory; while the upper story was wholly
given up to a gymnasium. This arrangement
while it left much to be desired, was a decided improvement
on anything previously within the reach of
the students. Professor Dupuis' report to the Board
showed how much use had been made of the building
during the past winter and how great had been the
need for it. Many contributions were received during
the winter for the mechanical laboratory, and several
articles were manufactured in the building under
the supervision of the Dean and Mr. Carmichael.
The ladies of Kingston decided to try and
raise the sum of $3000 to pay for the new gymnasium
and workshops, and a committee was formed with
Mrs. John McIntyre as President. Several
entertainments were held during the winter, and on
the 26th of April, a three days entertainment was
held in the University buildings, which included
lectures, concerts, fancy sales and an Art Loan Exhibition,
and which was called the Queen's Fair, in
honour of the Queen's Jubilee. The undertaking,
which was carried out with much spirit by the ladies
was in great measure successful, and $1500
was raised by their exertions. At a
