Bell's resignation took effect at the end of this session,
and Mr. George Chown was appointed for a year at
a salary of $900 in his place, the Trustees to make
a permanent appointment the following year.

At Convocation the portrait of Dr.
Bell was presented to the University to be hung in Convocation
Hall and an address was presented to Dr.
Bell by the sudents, who with all those who knew
him "deeply regretted that it had become necessary for
him to give up his active connection with the University."
At the request of the Trustees a minute was prepared
expressing their sense of Dr. Bell's faithful services.

Again this year the Governor General
and Lady Aberdeen were present at the closing functions
of the University, and at the Queen's Fair. Lady
Aberdeen received the honorary degree of L.L.D. as a
tribute to her personal worth and public services. After
the ceremonies in Convocation Hall, Lady Aberdeen
planted a tree opposite the main door, to be known
as The Queen's Elm in memory of Her Majesty.

A few minor appointments were made this year,
Professor Dupuis was appointed Professor of Astronomy
for another year, and the Rev'd James Carruthers of
New Glasgow was appointed Watkins Lecturer in
Elocution for the ensuing session. Professors
